Clover and Wizzley Presto, two narrative driven, 2D platformers both with visible (and confirmed by each developer) influences taken from Dizzy, both being released by home development teams (on Microsoft's XNA software for the 360, and for the iPod Touch & iPhone) are both on the eve of their respective releases.
Anyone feel that if both of these games perform well (Clover particularly has generated a decent ammount of hype) for their developers that Codemasters might look into bringing Dizzy back?
(i know there are enough similar topics on this subject, just thought these two games to me represent the biggest potential move forward in this area for some time!)
I'm asking if people think Codemasters might at least consider looking into it, regardless of whatever problems there might be in the way.
Besides, Codies are a massive company anyway, whatever legal issues there might be would inevitably be pretty small scale to them. Especially if there's the slightest possibility in them making a long term profit from such small investment.
Sadly it's doubtful Dizzy will ever return, at least not on the next generation platform. Also, I don't think a 3D Dizzy game would be that good. It would take away all the greatness of the Dizzy games. Dizzy is best left as a 2D game, like the Sonic the Hedgehog games should be and look at how bad them games are in 3D! I think what would be good to see and should be considered by Codemasters is to release a best of Codemasters compilation with all the Dizzy games included for the handheld market. Playing the original versions of the Dizzy games on the Nitnendo DS and the Sony PSP would be fantastic and would help spark renewed interest in the Dizzy games. I'm a bit surprised Codemasters haven't considered this to be honest considering their great back catalogue of games. Sega, Capcom, EA, Activision and Midway have done it with their greatest hits compilations for the handhelds, Codemasters should do the same, it would sell really well I think.
I read somewhere that the people behind Dizzy would only bring him back if it was 'something special' and the dreaded term '3D' was mentioned. 3D Dizzy would be truly awful.
There IS an up-to-date non-official Dizzy game (ie fan game) being worked on, which will combine classic dizzy-style gameplay with an up-to-date engine. I know this because it's me that's working on it! It won't be available on DS or PSP, but will be available on PC (Windows/Linux) and Mac... and possibly the Pandora portable games console (subject to it ever being launched and some essential libraries being ported to it).
The bad news is that it's going to be at least a year before anything is ready...

This sounds great. Do you plan to release this for the PSP and DS? I think on those platforms, Dizzy would sell brilliantly as you could easily play it on the go. I hope eventually a company comes forward and brings out a compilation of the old Dizzy games on one of the handhelds. I can't see Codemasters doing it from what I've heard, but maybe another company could get permission from Codies to release such a compilation. I hope so anyway.
Unfortunately PSP and DS are pretty much out of the question. The engine I am using is Windows/MacOS/Linux only.
The only reason a Pandora port may be possible is that its base OS is a full-blown linux distro, but as it runs an ARM CPU Clanlib, the underlying graphics and audio library, would need to be ported first: and that is well beyond my technical expertise!
Anyway, I should have something to show the Dizzy community soon, a 'proof-of-concept' if you were, to try and get some graphics artists on board (my graphics skills suck!)
